NEWSAGENCIY BUSINESS — IS IT FOR YOU ??
Are you sick of working for a boss, continually worried about your job security, bored with the every day routine, not challenged intellectually? Perhaps you need to consider a change or maybe you already have. Buying your own business, benefiting from your own effort and ideas, growing a business and increasing its value and profiting from the capital gain generated, sounds great doesn’t it?
My name is Neil Barry and that’s pretty much what I did in my own newsagency for over 20 years. It’s not as easy as it sounds and I learnt some important lessons along the way. It is my hope that I can help you find the right Newsagency, so you too can benefit from your own efforts.
I will be writing a series of articles over the coming months providing you with the benefit of my experience and explaining why, in my opinion, Newsagencies are one of the best and safest businesses you can invest in. I welcome your input and any comments or questions you wish to make can be directed to me via email and I will be happy to respond.
Newsagencies fall into three categories or classes: retail shop only, such as you see in a shopping centre, retail and delivery of newspapers and magazines etc., more likely to be in a strip shop precinct, and delivery only, most likely operating out of a shed or building other than a retail shop.
Today I’ll keep my comments general and as time goes by, I will explore the differences between the various newsagency types, in more detail.
How would you describe the Newsagency? As a business, an independent trader, a franchise, a large retail marketing group, a licensed operator, or a commission agent? Well it’s all of these and more and this is what makes the industry so exciting, challenging, and a good investment decision.
The strength of the Golden Casket Corporation as the franchise partner of newsagencies, backed by the Tatts Group which is the licenced operator for soft gambling and totalisator betting in most states of Australia, together with the contractual support of all the large magazine and newspaper distributors, each guaranteeing a designated exclusive territory to the business, has created a unique and unparalleled business model unmatched by any other small or medium business available on the market. It is this foundation around which the newsagency business has developed which solidifies its value on the open market and gives confidence to buyers, sellers, suppliers and lenders alike.
In the following months I will go into more detail on how newsagencies operate, how I have seen so many changes occur and how the sector has adapted and prospered from those changes.
I have many newsagencies for sale. So, if you are in the market, or considering buying a business, you are welcome to contact me either for details on those businesses for sale, or for a general chat.
